Canisius College (20-16; 14-2) softball catcher Jesse Rosenhahn tied
the school single-season home run record with a lead off dinger in the
first inning as the Griffs defeated Niagara University (18-15; 10-6) 8-6
on senior day Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The
junior's sixth homer of the season equals senior Jen
Silata's 1997 total.
Trailing 8-2 in the seventh inning, Niagara loaded the bases on two singles and a Griffin error. Canisius pitcher Sarah Skorupa walked in a run and gave up a two-run double before Erin Crowley came on in relief and got the final out.
The Griffs scored three runs in the first, keyed by Rosenhahn's solo shot and a Sue Raiport two-run jack, which scored Jen Silata.
Canisius added five more in the second on an RBI single by Rosenhahn, a two-run double by Raquel Alvarez and a Raiport double, her 12th of the season.
Senior Kristina Chavez (9-8), playing in her final home contest, pitched three innings, allowing three hits, no runs and striking out four.
Crowley pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
Canisius returns to action Friday, May 1, as the top seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament at Marist College. The Griffs square off against Fairfield at noon. The tourney winner will host the Northeast Conference champion in a est-of-three series for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
