Griffs Sweep Niagara
The Canisius College (16-15; 11-1) softball team swept two games at Niagara (13-11; -5) Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game 4-2 and the second 9-5.
Pitcher Kristina Chavez (7-7) picked up the game-one victory, allowing six hits, two runs, and four walks in six innings while striking out two.
The Griffs scored two runs in the third inning on a RBI single by Raquel Alvarez, which scored Janice Hoeltke, and an RBI fielder's choice by Jesse Rosenhahn.
Canisius picked up another run in the sixth on Jen Silata's RBI single, which scored Rosenhahn. Tracy Horvath scored Raiport with an RBI single for the fourth and final run in the seventh. Erin Crowley pitched one inning to pick up the save for the Griffins.
In the second game, Crowley started and threw five innings, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out two.
The Griffs scored three runs in the first, keyed by Jen Silata's two-RBI triple. Silata scored on a passed ball later in the inning.
Raquel Alvarez doubled in Lynn Stoczynski in the second inning, and Stoczynski drove in Jackie Fusco with a fielder's choice in the fourth. Canisius added five runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-1 lead.
Niagara came back with four runs in the fifth, but it was not enough as the Griffs earned their 16th win of the season.
Canisius returns to action Saturday at Siena for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
