Griffs Sweep Rider
The Canisius College softball team opened its 1998 MAAC schedule with a sweep of Rider University in a doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex Saturday afternoon. The Griffs squeaked out a 4-2 victory in the first game and won the second contest, 7-3.
Trailing 4-2 with two outs in the top of the seventh of game one, Rider loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Aubrey Becker, Lynn Van Camp and Kristen Dembinsky. The Griffs brought in closer Sarah Skorupa (Kenmore, N.Y.), who got Danielle Panikiewsky on a ground out to second base to earn her first save of the season.
Leading 3-2 in the sixth, Canisius collected an insurance run when Jacqueline Fusco (Lancaster, N.Y.) singled to center field, driving in Amy Brelinsky (Newport, N.Y.).
Canisius jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Jen Silata's (Elmira, N.Y.) double to left center drove in Joy Judski (Vestal, N.Y.), and Jesse Rosenhahn (West Seneca, N.Y.) hit a two-run blast over the center field fence.
Kristina Chavez (West Covina, Calif.) improved to 2-6 after pitching six and two-thirds innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just one earned run.
The Griffs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on a Silata two-run homer over the right center field fence. Rider tied the game in the second when Danielle Lake bunted to pitcher Erin Crowley (Brampton, Ontario), who threw the ball over Judski's head and into left field, allowing Courtney Wolfe and Lake to score.
Judski put Canisius back on top with a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the inning and gave the Griffs a 4-3 lead in the fourth with a double to right field that scored Fusco. Tracy Horvath (Highland, Ind.) added to the lead in the fourth with a bases loaded single to center field, which drove in Silata and Chavez.
Crowley went the distance, allowing nine hits, three runs and one earned run.
Canisius improved to 6-13 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC. The Griffs play a 3 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday, April 7, against Colgate in the Demske Sports Complex.
